Is Leadership Certificate Right for You?
Chesnee Sumner had doubts when she first signed up for the Leadership Certificate program.
"I really wasn't sure what I was getting into when I first signed up," she admits. "I'd heard about the organization, but I didn't really know what young professionals did or what I'd be getting myself into. Would it be homework? After-hours work? Was this actually going to fit into my life?"
Why Chesnee Joined
As a Program Specialist at the National Rural Health Resource Center, Chesnee works at the intersection of rural health systems, program management, and community health. Chesnee has a natural tendency toward directness, allowing her to get things done effectively. But she knew there was more to leadership than moving agendas forward.
"I wanted to strengthen my leadership skills and hone in on my communication skills," Chesnee explains. "I have a tendency to be very direct, and people are either very receptive to that or they're not."
The Unexpected Win
What surprised Chesnee the most were the sessions on emotional intelligence and mental health.
"Learning how to be more resilient and honestly learning how to take care of yourself as a leader—that was the most helpful thing I took away from the program."
What Stuck With Her
Months later, Chesnee still uses what she learned:
Communication frameworks that account for different personality types and emotional states.
Emotional intelligence that lets her read a room and adjust her (naturally) direct style.
Mindfulness practices that help her know when to push and when to step back.
Prioritization skills that honor both the task and the human beings carrying it out.
Should You Join?
"If you're wanting to jump into a management position or a leadership role but really don't know how to start—or if you want to refine skills you already have—I encourage everyone to apply," Chesnee says.
The Leadership Certificate program is a unique opportunity to learn leadership skills with like-minded individuals in the Knoxville community. It’s a chance to improve as a leader, openly discuss ideas, and connect with others.
